The short answer is as soon as a move to the UAE looks likely.
That isn’t always possible, of course. Relocations are often decided quickly, and plenty of families start their school search with only a few weeks to go and still end up somewhere they are very happy with. So it is worth understanding why earlier helps, and what to do if you don’t have much time.
Why earlier tends to help
Most British and international schools in Dubai begin their academic year in late August, and many families aim to start then. That puts a lot of demand into the same few months.
Schools handle this in different ways. Some register interest a long way ahead, assess in batches and make offers well before term. Others work through the year as places come up. Popular year groups at popular schools can be full long before some families even start looking.
Having time on your side means you can look properly before committing. More schools stay in play, and if your first choice doesn’t work out, there is room to recover.
What affects your timetable
There is no single deadline that applies everywhere. It depends on the schools on your list, since each sets its own admissions process. It depends on the year group, because the start of primary or secondary school can behave quite differently from the middle years. It takes longer to find places for several children, especially if you want them at the same school or at schools that make sense together. Paperwork matters too: records from your child’s current school can take a while to arrive, and some documents need to be attested. And if you don’t yet know where you will live, the school search and the house search need to move together.
If the move is sudden
When time is short, the order you do things in matters more than usual.
- Find out early, and directly, which schools actually have the possibility of a place in the right year group.
- Start gathering documents straight away. They can hold up an otherwise straightforward application.
- Focus on a small number of well-matched schools rather than applying everywhere and hoping.
- Keep track of offers, deadlines and deposits, so that nothing is accepted or lost by default.
A short timetable doesn’t mean settling for the wrong school. It just means being more deliberate about where your time goes.
Families also arrive partway through the year. Places do come up when other families leave, and a mid-year start suits some children well. The same principle applies: find out what is really available before you spend time on visits.
