Not every move lines up with the start of the school year. Work, housing and family plans often mean arriving in January, after the spring break, or at some other point entirely.
A mid-year move is very possible. It just works a little differently from a September start.
What changes
At the start of the year, schools plan their places in advance. Part-way through, a place usually exists only because another family has left. That means availability is the first question, not the last. A school that suits your child perfectly is only an option if it has room in the right year group.
Schools that follow an April-start calendar, such as many Indian curriculum schools, have a different pattern again, with their main intake in the spring.
What to check first
- Which schools on your list have a place, or a realistic chance of one, in each child’s year group.
- How quickly they can assess and make a decision, since some schools move faster than others.
- Which documents they need, and how long your child’s current school will take to provide them.
Doing these in this order saves a great deal of time. Visits come after you know a place is possible.
Helping a child settle mid-year
Joining a class that has already formed can feel daunting, but children often settle quickly, especially when the school has a good routine for new arrivals. It is worth asking how a school welcomes students who join part-way through the year, and whether the curriculum your child is coming from lines up with where the class has reached.
Documents to start on early
Mid-year moves often leave little time, and paperwork is the part most likely to cause delay. Schools will usually ask for recent reports and a transfer certificate from your child’s current school. Depending on the country you are moving from, some documents may need to be attested before a Dubai school or KHDA can accept them.
It is worth asking your current school for documents as soon as the move is confirmed, and asking each Dubai school exactly what it needs before you apply.
Questions to ask a school about joining part-way through
- Is there a place in each child’s year group now, and if not, how realistic is one for our date?
- How quickly can you assess and decide?
- How do you welcome children who arrive part-way through a term?
- How closely does what my child has covered so far match where the class has reached?
