When children are close in age and similar in how they learn, finding one school for all of them is often straightforward. It becomes harder when they need quite different things: one child who thrives on pace and challenge, another who needs more support, a teenager in exam years alongside a younger brother or sister.
Start with each child separately
It helps to begin by thinking about each child on their own. What does this child need from a school to do well and be happy? Which kind of environment, curriculum and size of school would suit them? Only then bring the lists together.
Starting with logistics, one school and one drop-off, can mean one child’s needs quietly decide the choice for everyone.
Together or apart
Keeping brothers and sisters at the same school has real advantages: one routine, one set of term dates, one school community, and often the reassurance for a younger child of an older sibling nearby. Many schools also give some priority to siblings of current pupils.
Different schools can still be the right answer when the children’s needs genuinely differ. The practical cost is real, though, especially in Dubai, where the school run can take a large part of the day. If you are considering two schools, look at the journey between them at the times you would actually travel.
When one child needs additional support
Dubai’s inclusive education framework expects private schools to welcome children with special educational needs and disabilities, described locally as students of determination, and not to refuse a place simply because of a child’s needs. Schools vary a great deal, though, in how they organise support, how much is included and what costs extra.
Questions worth asking:
- How is learning support organised, and who would work with my child?
- How do you plan and review support, and how are parents involved?
- Is any support charged separately, and how is that decided?
- How do you support children with similar needs in this year group now?
It is best to share reports and assessments openly from the start, for every child. A school that understands each child is in a much better position to say honestly whether it is the right place.
Timing
Children in different year groups may face different deadlines and different assessments, and a place may be available for one child before the other. Decide early what you would do if only one child is offered a place at your preferred school, so that you are not making that decision under pressure.
